NYC logophobia

Not only is this new logo on taxi cabs but it also appears on DOE materials, as shown.

I wasn't glad to see it on an information packet handed to me by my daughter's 5th grade teacher, although I was glad for the information. I'm just having trouble with it. I believe it was the blog Pardon me for Asking that called it blobby. (NO, it was i'm not saying, i'm just sayin) It is much more. Words it brings to my mind: edema, dropsy, constriction, smog, claustrophobia, congestion, eminent domain, brutality, bully, brass knuckles, abuse of power, gridlock. Escape from New York.

I believe the font is called Power Station and some of its usages look pretty good. But not this. Sorry to be a pain in the ass, NYC government. Maybe it's just me, but I think this logo needs some air.

This logo is ugly as sin. How could this happen in a city as full of designers as this one?

Maybe it's a cry for help

On further reflection, this logo reminds me of diabetes (poor circulation) and asthma (can't get air.) as well as high blood pressure and heart congestion. It is a very afflicted look.

If that one small logo contains elements of so many public health issues pertinent to NYC, maybe it's genius, just not in the way you'd expect.

Raw food only for this logo from now on.

I'll bet some high "powered" designer from this city got paid nice bucks for it.

I don't like it either. It's got curves... not like a pretty lady, but like a champion weightlifter.

Old first, if it makes you feel any better, i'm not sayin reported that a company named Smart Design "a brand identity and design shop who's created some fantastically-elegant products (OXO kitchenware, XM's SKYFI receiver) and brand communication (Simple Human's branding and packaging)" designed the logo for free. I'd love to see any other options they came up with. The strength represented in this one appealed to someone, I guess. But you can't run a city on strength alone, things like vulnerability and wisdom are important too.

Anonymous, so true. The Y calls out for barbells.

This would be a perfect logo for a prison.

Some kids view schools as a prison and escape as soon as they can. Why is NYC perpetuating such a depressing idea.

I'll bet lots of your readers can come up with something better.
