Falling asleep Saturday night, feeling icky with my cold, I see three things.
The first is 9th street with soft drifts of snow, and smiling people at the curb. Happiness, purification, quiet.
The second, the dome of Beth Elohim bearing a rectangular hole in its center, through which I can see blue sky.
The last thing, a group of children with very yellow-orange hair. One girl of about 7 stares at me with intense golden eyes.
I am surprised to have seen anything that night, so surprised I didn't drop into darkness without a scrap of definition.
