cluck old hen
This monster mushroom was keeping sentry on the North side of Lookout Hill Sunday morning. According to my guidebook, it's Hen of the Woods, not only edible, but "choice." But as this is everyone's mushroom, I didn't snag any of it. One has to be so careful about mushrooms anyway. Still I can tell you beyond a shadow of a doubt this is not the destroying angel.

I've been spending more time on Lookout Hill lately, and came across this huge old thing yesterday. Thanks for the heads-up!
I've never seen anything like it! It was almost like running into rafflesia arnoldii, the world's largest flower. But less smelly!
Saw some Hen of the Woods being sold at the Greenmarket yesterday. Didn't think to ask if it was from Lookout Hill.
I've never tried it, but I hear it gets its name from the fact that it tastes like chicken. Maybe I'll get some at the greenmarket next week. Did you see it at Grand Army?
