St. Marks

I spoke with a man who at one point maintained a coop of homing doves which he's had to downsize to appease his neighbors. On our last visit to the animal shelter where he works he told me a trade secret - when he was hired to release doves at weddings he instead released white Homing Pigeons, which exuberantly create an impression of being set free even though they head straight back to the coop after the culmination of the spectacle.

If he had used actual white doves as he was expected to, they would have died because they're not suited for life in the wild, and they aren't trained to get back home. You do what you have to do, even if it complicates already complicated symbolism. What the betrothed don't know won't hurt them.
