Delicatessen Delicatessen
Delicastessen is sort of a pretty word, I haven't consciously seen the word in so long I might as well have believed the word Deli had no parent. It sounds German. It is especially nice to see the word unabbreviated and elegantly hand-painted in raisin on this old sign on the corner of Prospect Avenue and Prospect Park West. It fosters one of those "time travel" moments, especially with the aid of photoshop.

When I was a kid on Herkimer Street, my friend Carl Deppe's father had a Delicatessen on Gates and Evergreen. The family were German immigrants in Bushwick. Oohh, the smells. The wonderful smell, some combination of meat, salad, pickling, cheese, I don't know what all. And tobacco smoke, I think, as well.
That deli in your pic was known as Henry's growing up and the food was as classic as the sign...Great German deli. All the HOly Name kids would run up there for drinks in between basketball games in the boys schoolyard. Seeing it brings back some great memories. I have a hankering for some real German Potato Salad!
